The band of students from a suburb of Magdeburg managed their breakthrough as international acclaimed rock stars in only four years time. Well, I think that the look of the band, erm, is also a major factor to their international success because they dont just look hampty-dampty village kind of German. Markus Kavka: Es ist vollkommen klar, dass jetzt nicht eine Million Teenager, egal ob Jungs oder Mädchen, so aussehen können wie Bill Kaulitz. In sofern hat man da fast sone androgyne Fantasiegestalt auf die man halt alles projizieren kann. Its really obvious that a million teenager, no matter if [theyt look like Bill Kaulitz. Tom: Ich hab ja früher immer auf, erm, andere Künstler geguckt und so und so gedacht ..Alter, haben die n Haufen Kohle, stellen sich ein Mal am Tag auf irgendsone bekackte Bühne und spielen ihren Song.. und danach In the past, Ive always, erm, looked like at other artists and like thought ..Dude, theyve got such an awesome life somehow. Und das wussten wir aber auch erst irgendwie nachdem wir das alles erlebt haben, so. and still complain and whine all day long and have got an awesome party and somehow live in luxury and erm Thats not even close to it [reality]. And we also only got to know that after experiencing it all somehow, like. Voice-over: Die Geschichte von Tokio Hotel beginnt gut zwei Monate vor dem Mauerfall in Leipzig. Hier werden am 1. September 1989 die Zwillinge, Bill und Tom Kaulitz, geboren. Tokio Hotels story begins in Leipzig about two months prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall [20th anniversary next month!]. It is here the twins, Bill and Tom Kaulitz, are born on 1st September 1989. Bill: Wir sahen auch als wir ganz klein waren ja total gleich aus. Also, wir hatten ja damals noch so Pullover an wo unsere Namen drauf standen, damit überhaupt die Leute uns auseinander halten konnten und wir hatten Tom hatte nen Leberfleck hier. *pointing to cheek* When we were very little we totally looked the same. Like back then we had jumpers with our names on them so that people could tell us apart and we had Tom had got a mole here. *pointing to cheek* Tom: Vor allem gleichen wir uns was so diese Dominanz angeht. Also und das ist ja halt auch oft eigentlich das Problem, weil wir beide extrem so die Leader sind, so eigentlich, die immer, erm, laut sind, immer ihre Meinung kundtun. Were especially similar when it comes to that kind of dominance. Meanings actually also the problem because both of us are extremely kind of the leader, actually. The ones that are always, erm, noisy and always express their opinion. Voice-over: Die Kaulitz-Zwillinge sind Temperament im Doppelpack. Mutter Simone und Vater Jörg haben alle Hände voll zu tun. The Kaulitz-twins are twice the temperament. Mother Simone and father Jörg have got all their hands full. Bill: Also, ich muss sagen, Tom und ich waren ja zusammen immer ziemlich stark. Also, wir haben zusammen immer Wir haben uns halt super ergänzt. Well, Ive got to say, Tom and I have always been quite powerful together. Like, we] togetherve just complemented one another brilliantly. Tom: Ich glaube, diese Stärke kam echt davon, dass wir relativ frei erzogen wurden. Also, unsere Mutter hat immer gesagt ..Sagt eure Meinung, so. Das ist das Wichtigste... I think that this strength was really the result of us being brought up relatively liberal. Meaning, our mother always told us ..Speak your mind, like. This is most important... Voice-over: Mit ihrer großen Klappen schaffen es Bill und Tom schon als Fünfjährige ins Rampenlicht. Sie bekommen eine Rolle in dem Film . Thanks to their big mouths Bill and Tom already make it into the limelight aged five. The get a role in the film Crazy about you]. Bill: Meine Mama hat mir erzählt wir waren super-frech und wir haben irgendwie dem Typen gar nicht ..Hallo.. gesagt und wir haben irgendwie die ganze Zeit nur rumgespielt und er meinte dann ..Genau das! Genau solche Zwillinge hab ich gesucht... My mum told me that weve been super cheeky and somehow didnt even say ..hello.. to that guy and somehow weve just played around all the time and he then said ..Exactly! Thats exactly the kind of twins I was looking for... Film: Hey, hast du nicht gehört, was sie gesagt hat? Ich höre schlecht. Hey, didn Ive got bad hearing. Bill: Ich glaube, das Wichtigste was wir aufn Weg gekriegt haben, war eigentlich das Vertrauen. Uns wurde nie vorgeschrieben, was wir machen sollten und wir waren von Anfang an ziemlich selbstständig erzogen und erm, wir durften immer das ausleben, was wir wollten. I think trust was actually the most important [thing] given to us along the way. We were never told what we were supposed to do and from the beginning we were brought up to be independent and erm, we were always allowed to live up to whatever we wanted to. Voice-over: Die Zwillinge bekommen viel Aufmerksamkeit und suchen sie auch. Früh ist klar, Bill und Tom sind geborene Entertainer. The twins receive lots of attention and are also looking for it. It soon becomes clear that Bill and Tom are born entertainers. Bill: Wenn uns unsere Eltern irgendwohin mitgenommen haben auf irgendwelche Partys oder so, dann wurde immer schnell relativ schnell klar, dass wir irgendwie Ja, die Leute immer unterhalten. Immer, wenn da stand ne Bühne oder da war irgendwo was wo man stehen konnte und was machen konnte Also, wir waren dann immer die ersten, die dann echt oben waren und das gemacht haben. Whenever our parents took us somewhere to some kind of party or the likes, then it always soon became clear that [became] clear relatively soon, that we somehow Yes, to always entertain people. Whenever there was some kind of opportunity to, [we] always there was a stage or there was some place where one could stand and do stuff Well, weve always been the first ones being up there and doing something. Voice-over: In den ersten Jahren hat die Mutter die Zwillinge immer gleich angezogen. Aber schon in der Grundschule entwickelten sie ihren eigenen, eher ausgefallenen Stil. During the first years, the mother of the twins always dressed them the same. However, in primary school they already developed their own, rather unusual style. Bill: Ich glaube, das hat das alles auch geprägt. Dass wir echt so ne zeitlang total gleich aussahen. Ja, und dann fing das auch so an, echt, dass wir dann so relativ schnell uns alleine anziehen wollten. Und wir wollten dann nicht mehr irgendwie, dass uns unsere Mama morgens die Sachen rauslegt, sondern wir wollten dann echt selber entscheiden, was wir anziehen. I think that it also left its mark on all of it. That we really looked totally the same for a while. Yes, and then it also really kind of started that we wanted to get dressed by ourselves relatively soon. And we somehow didnt want our mum to put out clothes in the mornings anymore but really wanted to decide ourselves what we wanted to wear. Tom: Bei mir wars echt immer so, dass ich extrem auf diesem Hip-Hop-Film war, ganz schnell. Ich hatte irgendwie, zwar keine Baggypants, aber ich hab sie halt trotzdem unterm Arsch getragen. Pretty soon with me it was really always the case of being extremely along those Hip-Hop lines. Somehow I although, not baggy pants d still wear them [hanging] underneath the ass. Voice-over: Besonders Bill fällt optisch aus der Rolle. Mit neun Jahren fängt er an sich die Haare zu färben und sich zu schminken. Especially Bill visually steps out of line. Aged nine he starts dying his hair and wearing make-up. Bill: Also, ich fand schon immer so Vampir-Filme und Hexen-Filme und so was gut. Erm, hab so was immer geguckt und so mein, mein Kinderfilm, den ich geliebt hab irgendwie als Kind, den ich in und auswendig kenne, ist Das Labyrinth mit David Bowie. Ich glaube, das hat mich schon geprägt, aber es war nie so eine Person. Also, dass ich jetzt sage, es war jetzt David Bowie oder der und der, sondern es war echt, glaubne Mischung aus so vielen Leuten. Well, Ive always liked films about vampires and witches and so on. Erm, Ive always watched that kind [of films] and with David Bowie is a film from my, my childhood that I loved as a child and know inside out. I think that left its mark on me but it has never been [about] one person. Like, that I would say now that it was David Bowie or this or that one but I think it really was a cross between so many people. Tom: Bill war eigentlich totaler Träumer, ehrlich gesagt. Der hat immer sein Ding gemacht und vor allem das lustige ist ja auch, dass, dass Wir beiden haben ja auch nie wirklich zu einander gepasst. Die Leute haben uns ja auch immer angeguckt. Und dann war das echt ne zeitlang, da rannte Bill echt total freakig rum. Actually Bill was a total dreamer, to be honest. Hed always do his thing and whats really funny is that, that The two of us never really suited one another. People always just looked at us. And then there was a time when Bill ran around looking totally freaky. Bill: Also, ich wusste, dass ganz, ganz viele Leute natürlich wahnsinnig negativ jetzt reden. Aber ich wollte das immer. Also, ich wollte nie, dass jemands viel schlimmer, wenn Leute sich nich über mich unterhalten haben als wenn Leute was Schlechtes gesagt haben. Well, I knew that many, many people were of course talking in an extremely negative way. However, Ive always wanted it. Meaning, I never wanted that somebody I thought it was worse for people not to talk about me than badmouthing me. Voice-over: Die Situation verschärft sich als die Zwillinge nach der Trennung der Eltern umziehen in das 650-Seelendorf Loitsche bei Magdeburg. The situation gets worse when the twins moved to the 650-inhabitants-village Loitsche near Magdeburg after their parents separation. Bill: Wir hatten sofort Ärger. Also, wir wurden sofort irgendwie beschimpft. We were in trouble immediately. Meaning, somehow we were insulted immediately. Tom: ..Ey, der hat rote Schnürsenkel drin. Die Linke Sau!.. ..Ey, hes got red shoelaces. That communist bastard!.. Bill: Oft musste unser Stiefvater uns abholen mitm Hund und Baseballschläger. Often our step-dad had to pick us up with with the dog and a baseball bat. Tom: Also das war auch morgens im Bus so. Da gabs echt immer Schlägereien eigentlich auch im Bus. Keiner hat sich um den anderen eigentlich gekümmert, so das war total so kalt. Well, it was like that even on the bus in the mornings. There have really always been fights, actually on the bus as well. Actually nobody took care of one another, like it was totally frosty [atmosphere] like that. Bill: Und in solchen Momenten waren wir, glaub ich, wahnsinnig froh, dass wir uns gegenseitig hatten und dass wir irgendwie, erm, immer zusammen waren und uns nie jemand irgendwo alleine erwischt hat. And in moments like that we were extremely happy that weve somehow, erm, always been together and nobody could get hold of us on our own. Voice-over: Auch auf dem Gymnasium stößt der Look, der aufmüpfigen Zwillinge auf wenig Gegenliebe. Immer wieder gibt es Ärger. The look of the defiant twins also didnt go down particularly well at grammar school. Time and again theres trouble. Bill: Es gab Lehrer an der Schule, die gesagt haben ..Ich unterrichte dich nich so wie du aussiehst... und ..Du kannst nicht geschminkt und gepierct zum Sportunterricht kommen... There were teachers at school who were saying ..Im not teaching you with the way you look... and ..You cant come to PE lessons wearing make-up and piercings... Voice-over: Dann sollen Bill und Tom endgültig zur Räson gebracht werden. Then Bill and Tom were supposed to finally see reason. [Letter is addressing an incident in May 2003; year seven of school. During a lesson a teacher had been spattered with ink by several students including Tom. Highlighted part reads that such behaviour would be disrespectful and insults the teachers dignity.] Bill: Die Lehrer haben uns dann auseinander genommen, in der siebten Klasse, was so das schlimmste Erlebnis war an der Schule. Also, ich glaube, ab dem Tag hatte niemandne Chance das wieder gut zu machen. Weil das so das schlimmste war, was uns passiert ist. Dass jemand uns auseinander gerissen hat. Then in year seven the teachers separated us which was like the worst experience in school. Like, I think, from that day on, nobody had even a chance to make that up to us again. Because that was just like the worst that happened to us. That someone tore us apart. Tom: Wir haben das den Leuten nie gezeigt, dass es ne schwierige Zeit für uns war. Also, wir haben immer nach außen hin waren wir immer sehr, sehr stark und dominant. Also, wir haben uns nie irgendwie unterbuttern lassen von irgendwem oder so. We never let people see that it was a tough time for us. Meaning, weve always been very, very strong and dominant on the outside. Like, weve never let anybody push us around somehow or something like that. Voice-over: In ihrer Freizeit beginnen Bill und Tom einen gemeinsamen Traum zu leben. Sie wollen Musik machen und schreiben erste Songs. In their spare time Bill and Tom start to live a shared dream. They want to make music and write first songs. Bill: Ich hab immer gern geschrieben. Also, ich hab echt, auch immer meiner Mama, Zettel geschrieben und so. Und hab immer gerne Sachen aufgeschrieben und irgendwann hing halt von unserem Stiefvater. Er hatte die da hingehängt und meinte ..Ja, ich hab ich stell sie hier einfach hin und wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr euch die auch nehmen... Und wir haben und Tom hat die sich dann gegriffen und hat irgendwie angefangen drauf zu spielen. Ive really written notes and so on, also always to my mum. And Ive always liked to write down things and some time there was a guitar just somehow hanging in our room s. He had put it up there and said ..Yes, I somehow dont have use for it and, andm just putting it here and if you want, you can also take it... And we and then Tom grabbed it and somehow started playing on it. Tom: Wir waren komplett schmerzfrei, muss man sagen. Weil wir haben echt Also, die ersten Akkorde, die ich spielen konnte, da hat Bill direkt was drauf getextet. Unsere Texte waren echt noch super naiv und eigentlich total, erm, lustig, wenn wir uns das heute anhören. One has to say, weve been completely painless [for others]. Because we Well, Bill immediately put some lyrics to the first chords I could play. If were listening to them these days, our lyrics were really extremely naive and actually totally, erm, funny. Exactly... *nodding*Tom: So die wirklichen Anfänge wars dann eher so, dass die Leute uns niedlich fanden und ..Guck mal die kleinen Jungs.. und so. In the very beginning it was just like we were smiled at [by others] if anything. It was more like people thinking we were cute and ..Just look at those little boys.. and so on. Voice-over: Doch dann machen sich die Kaulitz-Zwillinge auch in Magdeburg und Umgebung einen Namen. Sie spielen auf Bandwettbewerben und in kleinen Clubs, wie dem . However, then the Kaulitz-twins start making a name for themselves in Magdeburg and surroundings as well. They play at band competitions and in small clubs, like the Gröninger Bad. Bill: Das war sone offene Bühne und wir sind irgendwie aufgetreten und haben gesungen und wir hatten halt echt schon viel rumerzählt, dass wir auch jemanden suchen, aber wir wollten unbedingt jemanden in unserem Alter haben, ungefähr. Und dann waren Georg und Gustav da. That was like an open stage and we performed somehow and used to sing and had already spread the word a lot that we were also looking for someone [to join]but we absolutely wanted someone approximately our age. And then there were Georg and Gustav. Gustav: Erm, es war sehr lustig, erm, solche seltsamen Menschen auf der Bühne zu sehen. *chuckling* Erm, it was very funny, erm, seeing those weird people on the stage. *chuckling* Georg: Damals hießen sie ja noch Black Question Mark Wer auf den Namen gekommen is weiß ich auch bis heute nicht so genau. Back then they were still called Black Question Mark Who came up with that name To this day I still havent got a clue. Voice-over: Bill und Tom sind damals 12, Bassist Georg 14 und Schlagzeuger Gustav 13. Schnell ist klar: die vier ergänzen sich. Back then Bill and Tom are 12 [years old], bassist Georg 14 and drummer Gustav 13. It soon becomes clear: those four complement each other. Georg *still grinning*: Bill und Tom hatten ja schon so ein, zwei wirklich gute Songs. *starting to laugh* Erm, und die haben sie uns dann am Anfang auch so vorgespielt und wir haben dann halt geguckt, was kann man dazu schlagzeugmäßig, bassmäßig machen. Bill and Tom already had like one, two really good songs. *starting to laugh* Erm, in the beginning theyve also like played them to us and we just had a look as to what we could add to it bass- and drum-wise. Bill: Das war irgendwie son richtig gutes Gefühl so zum ersten Mal wirklich n richtiges Schlagzeug zu hören und so. Und nen richtigen Bass. Somehow that was a really good feeling to truly hear real drums for the first time and so on. And a real bass. Gustav: Es ist ja generell schon schwer irgendwie Leute zu finden, im gleichen Alter, die auch Musik machen. Und das war schon, schon echt cool. Dass wir so alle gleich alt sind, fast und erm, haben dann halt in allen möglichen Clubs gespielt. Alle immer noch 12 und n Keks alt. Und erm, haben dann da irgendwie um zehn auf der Bühne gestanden. In general its difficult enough to find people that also make music and being the same age. And that really was kind of cool. That all of us are almost the same age and erm, then [we] played in all sorts of clubs. All of us still only being 12 and a cookie [meaning ] years old and erm, somehow being on stage at like 10pm. Voice-over: Jedes Wochenende stehen Black Question Mark jetzt auf der Bühne und rocken. Die Fangemeinde wächst. From now on Black Question Mark are on stage every weekend and rock out. The fan community is growing. Bill: Irgendwann stand dann in sonem, in sonem Ausschnitt ..Black Questionmark mit ihrem teuflisch guten Gitarrensound... Und da war Tom total stolz drauf und meinte ..Ok, wir müssen jetzt uns umbenennen und zwar geil. Wir nennen uns jetzt ... Some day it read in a, in a [newspaper/magazine] snippet ..Black Question Mark and their devilishly good guitar sound... And Tom was totally proud of it and said ..Ok, weve got to change our name now, in fact is wicked. We call ourselves from now on... Voice-over: Auf eigene Kosten nehmen Devilish eine CD mit sieben Songs auf. Doch der Weg in die Charts scheint von der ostdeutschen Provinz aus unendlich weit. At their own expense Devilish record a CD with seven songs. However, the road from the East-German countryside to the charts seems endlessly long. Tom: So in Magdeburg auftreten, das ist alles schön und gut, aber wir werden hier niemals irgendnen Produzenten oder irgendnen Manager oder Plattenfirma oder irgendwas mit der Musikszene, erm, zu tun haben. Das ist einfach die Chance war sehr gering. *nodding* Its all well and good to perform in Magdeburg but here well never have anything to do with any producer or any manager or record label or anything with the music scene. Wir wohnen hier in, in Loitsche und die nächste Stadt ist Magdeburg und hier gibts keine Musikszene oder keine Plattenfirma oder so was... Tom and I always walked around and were saying *making pleading gesture* ..Please! There just has to be someone whos discovering this. There just has to be someone who sees how we We just always thought ..Shit! Were living in Loitsche and the closest city nearby is Magdeburg and theres no music scene there, nor a record label or anything... Voice-over: Bill trifft eine Entscheidung: 2003 bewirbt er sich bei der Casting-Show Star Search. Bill makes a decision: 2003 he applies for the casting show . Bill: Ich hab echt alles in Kauf genommen, eigentlich, um darauf aufmerksam zu machen. Ich wollte, dass die meine Band sieht. Dass jemand irgendwie Devilish sieht. Und ich hatte dann damals immer die Kamerateams immer zur Band gelockt und immer in den Proberaum geholt und die haben uns dann gefilmt, weil ich immer gehofft hab, dass es jemanden gibt, der uns als Band liebt. Actually I really put up with everything to draw attention to it [the band]. I wanted that the] the sees my band. That someone somehow sees Devilish. And back then I always lured the camera teams to the band and always took them to the rehearsal room and then theyve filmed us there because I always hoped that there would be someone whod love us as a band. Voice-over: Die Rechnung geht auf. Ein Hamburger Produzententeam besucht ein Konzert von Devilish in Magdeburg und ist begeistert. It pays off. A team of producers from Hamburg comes to see one of Devilsh and is thrilled. David Jost: Für mich gehts eigentlich immer nur darum irgendwien Künstler ein emotionales Potential und hat ein Künstler ne Willenskraft. Und erm und das beides hat diese Band zu 100% delivered. Und das in einer Form wie ich das aus Deutschland eigentlich noch nie zuvor erlebt habe. Actually to me it does an artist have the emotional potential and does an artist have willpower. And erm both of which Tokio Hotel delivered 100%. And Ive actually never experienced it to this extent in Germany before. Tom: Für mich war das n Auftritt wie jeder andere auch. Bloß, dass es da halt extrem abging. Ja, ich bin Ich weiß nur, ich bin danach von der Bühne gegangen, hab gedacht ..Geilster Auftritt bisher. Ist ja super gelaufen und so.. und dann kam ja die Anfrage irgendwann. Irgendwie ne Woche oder zwei Wochen später oder so. Ob wir ins Studio kommen können. To me it was a performance like any other. Only that it rocked extremely well. Yes, I was I only know that I thought ..Most awesome performance so far. That went exceptionally well and so on.. when I left the stage and then the enquiry followed at some point. Like a week or two later. Bill: Wir sind da hingefahren und wir waren so aufgeregt. We drove there and were so excited. Georg: Ich war, glaube ich, der einzige, der dann auch alles fotografiert und ich hab, erm, neulich mal wieder die Bilder durchgeguckt. Und was ich auch für Scheiß fotografiert hab. So echt, keine Leute drauf, nur das Mischpult und so. Damit ich das zu Hause meinen Freunden zeigen kann. I think I was the only one that had a camera with him. [I] Took pictures of everything as well and erm, the other day I was looking through the photos again. And what kind of shit I took pictures of as well. Really like, without any people, only the mixing desk and so on. So I could show it to my friends back home. Bill: Ich weiß noch, ich hab gar nichts rausbekommen und ich dachte immer nur ..Oh Gott, hoffentlich finden die das gut.., aber die hatten sich dann auch die Songs irgendwann mal angehört und so weiter. *sighing but smiling* Ja, das war schon aufregend. I still remember that I could barely make a peep and only ever thought ..Oh god, hopefully theyll like it... However, they also listened to the songs at some point and so on. *sighing and smiling* Yes, that really was exciting. And the atmosphere was really kind of familiar right from the start. We somehow had a small apartment above [the studio]. The four of us lived there and just started rehearsing. Tom: Wir haben in der Zeit so nen kleinen Vorgeschmack gekriegt wie es sein könnte, wenn wir vielleicht irgendwann mal erfolgreich sind und wirklich 24 Stunden zusammen sind. During that time we got a taste of what could be like if maybe wed ever be successful and would really be together for 24/7. Interview training: Ihr habt ja grad Erm, ..Its my life... Youve just released a single. What is it called? s my life... *LOL* Tom: In dem Alter wars so ohne Eltern in Hamburg sein, produzieren, zwischendurch waren ein paar Mädels da Das war so die Zeit unseres Lebens eigentlich. In der Zeit sind wir komplett aufgeblüht. Being that age and being in Hamburg without our parents, producing, occasionally having a few girls around that was like the time of our lives actually. During that time we completely blossomed out. Old video footage: Was hast du heute gesungen? aufgenommen, so Und die Leute waren begeistert als du gesungen hast? Ja, Wahnsinn! *laughing happily* What have you been singing today? ve recorded And people were enthusiastic when you were singing? Yes, awesome! *laughing happily* Voice-over: Eineinhalb Jahre später scheint der Traum vom Plattenvertrag endlich Wirklichkeit zu werden. One and a half years later the dream of a record deal finally seems to come true. Bill: Ja, also es war lange auch nicht klar was damit wird. Wir hatten halt irgendwann die ganzen Songs und dann haben wir gesagt ..Ey, wir haben hier so was wie ein Album. *smile* Also, wir haben auf jeden Fall so viele Songs.. und dann meinten die irgendwann ..Ok, wisst ihr was? Wir spielens jetzt einfach ner Plattenfirma vor... For a long time we didnt know what would happen to it. Some day we just had all those songs and then weve said ..Ey, weve got kind of like an album here. *smile* Meaning, we definitely have got as many songs.. and then at some point they said ..Ok, you know what? Were just going to play it to a record label... Voice-over: Sämtliche Plattenbosse der Republik reisen nun an um die Jungs live zu sehen. Now all the record label chiefs of the republic arrive to see the guys live. Bill: Wir wollten auch unbedingt, dass alle wissen, dass wir richtig Musik machen können, ja? Also, dass wir nicht irgendwie hier was schönes produziert haben, sondern, dass wir echt Musik machen können. We also absolutely wanted them to know that we could really make music, yes? Meaning, not that we produced something nice but could actually really make music. Tom: Wir wollten professionell sein und waren total entspannt, so als wenn ..Das ist unser täglich Brot hier.. und ne? ..Wir sind ja auch schon so Business-Hasen... *grinning* We wanted to be professional and were totally relaxed, just like ..Thatre doing every day.., right? ..Were also already like an old stager of the business... *grinning* Tom Bohne [Universal Germany]: Und das war wahrscheinlich so zum gleichen Zeitpunkt als die BMG und Universal ich nehme auch mal an die EMI und noch andere, erm, major companies die Band das erste Mal gesehen haben. Wir fanden das sehr, sehr gut, dachten aber vielleicht fehlt das noch der absolute Hit daraus. And that was probably about the same time that BMG and Universalm also assuming EMI and others, erm, major companies, saw the band for the first time. We thought it was very, very good but also thought that maybe the absolute hit single was missing in all of it. Bill: Das war schon komisch das zu hören, dann von anderen Leuten zum ersten Mal, wie sies von außen betrachten. It was kind of weird hearing it from other people for the first time and how it looked to them from the outside. Voice-over: Die Berliner Plattenfirma BMG ist eine der ersten, die das Potenzial der Band erkennt. Berlins record label BMG was one of the first to realise the potential of the band. Andy Sellenneit [former CEO BMG]: Die kamen in mein Büro. Wir hatten in diesem Altbau sone Doppeltür, erm, sone Schiebetür und die Schiebetür ging auf und ich sah Bill und Tom und weiß noch und das werde ich nie vergessen wie ich gedacht habe ..Lieber Gott, bitte lass sie singen können!.. Da standen Newcomer in meiner Tür, aber die Newcomer sahen aus wie Popstars und ich weiß, dass ich richtig aufgeregt war, weil ich dachte ..Oh, hoffentlich sind das starke Songs... Und als ich die gehört habe, war mir also klar ..Ok, sie können singen und es sind Mördersongs... They arrived at my office. Weve had some kind of double-door, erm, like a sliding door in that old building and the sliding door opened and I saw Bill and Tom and I still remember how I was thinking ..Dear Lord, please make that they can sing!.. There those newcomer were standing in my door, however, the newcomer looked like pop stars and I still remember that I was very excited because I thought ..Oh, hopefully theyve got powerful songs... And when I listened to them I knew ..Oh, they can sing and those songs are killing... Voice-over: Mit gerade mal 14 Jahren haben Bill und Tom mit ihrer Band den ersten Plattenvertrag in der Tasche. Bill and Tom and their band have got their first record deal under their belts with being only 14 years old. Bill: Wir sind durchgedreht. Wir haben uns so gefreut. Das war alles so zum Greifen nah und das hat alles so lange gedauert weil unsere Verträge und so weiter und dieses ganze Aushandeln. Das musste damals alles zum Vormundschaftsgericht. We went nuts. We were so ecstatic. Everything was within our grasp and it all took so long because our contracts and so on and all those negotiations. Back then all of it had to go through the guardianship court. Tom: Man hält ja alles für total überflüssig, weil ich mir gedacht habe ..Was wollen die denn kontrollieren?.. irgendwie. Sprecht doch kurz mit meiner Mutter. Ist alles ok. *laughing* One just thinks all of this would be completely unnecessary because somehow I just wondered ..What is it they want to check?... Just have a short chat with my mother. Its all ok. *laughing* Andy Sellenneit: Im Übrigen waren wir damals sehr glücklich darüber, dass es sich hinzog, weil der einzige kritische Punkt, den wir gesehen haben, war, dass es Medien geben wird, die sagen ..Die sind doch so jung und überhaupt kann man denn in dem Alter schon.. und diese üblichen Klichées, die auf Tokio Hotel nicht zutrafen. By the way, back then we were very happy that it all dragged on because the only critical issue we expected to come up with the media was them saying ..But theyre still so young and can you already do that being that age.. and the usual clichés that didnt apply to Tokio Hotel. Bill: 13 waren wir als wir ihn irgendwie kennen gelernt haben und mit Ende 15 kam es ja dann auch erst zur Veröffentlichung. Und wir hatten dann ja noch mal den Plattenvertrag verloren. We were 13 [years old] when weve somehow met them and the release finally happened at the end of 15. And weve also lost the record deal in between. Voice-over: Ende 2004 droht das Aus bevor es für die Band überhaupt erst richtig losgegangen ist. At the end of 2004 the end seems imminent before it even really started for the band. Andy Sellenneit: Sony und BMG gingen damals in die Gespräche, erm, zusammen ein Joint Venture zu machen und zusammen zu gehen und aus diesen beiden Plattenfirmen eine Plattenfirma zu machen. Back then Sony and BMG started talks, erm, about a joint venture and to get together and create one record label out of the two labels. Bill: Und plötzlich hieß es dann ..Was ist das denn für n Vertrag? Machen wir nich... *shaking head* And suddenly it was What kind of band is this? What *shaking head* David Jost: Ich glaube, da brach für die Band ne Welt zusammen. I think the world came crashing down for the band. Tom: Das, das hat mich so verletzt damals als da so extrem dran geglaubt und fand das so geil, dass ich, erm, dass ich das jetzt überhaupt gar nicht verstanden hab. Back then that, that really hurt me when Meaning I believed in it just so much and thought it was awesome, that I, erm, I just didnt understand it at all. Bill: Und als die Produzenten uns das gesagt haben, habne Woche nicht mehr gelacht. Ich war super traurig. And when the producers told us about it, I seriously didnt smile for a week after that, I think. I was incredibly sad. Tom: Für uns war der Traum eigentlich geplatzt, also in dem Moment Actually the dream was over for us well, in that moment
